Gin lovers have a wide range of options. You can mix them together to make some of the most famous cocktails around, such as the Negroni or Martini. But what is the difference between them? You can find out more by visiting Filey gin shop and reading the following!
London Dry Gin
It is a gin that originated in England. However, because of its popularity, it has been made all over the world. It’s used in Gin and Tonics and Martinis.
What makes it special? London Dry Gin’s distinctive taste is due to its strong juniper flavours. It is also jam-packed full of fresh citrus notes. A Martini’s citrus flavor is brought out by a lemon twist. Dry gins don’t contain artificial flavors such as sweeteners. It is a very natural way to drink gin.
Old Tom Gin
It was first known as “bathtub” gin in the 18th Century, because it was made in homes. This type of Gin wasn’t known for its high quality for a long while. Although the quality was bad, sweeteners or licorice were often used to make it more delicious. It is not the same as its primordial counterpart.
What makes it so special? Old Tom Gin has a higher amount of licorice, making it sweeter than regular gin. Although the sweetness may not taste exactly like licorice, it will be close. It is more flavorful than London Dry Gin. This makes it ideal to mix drinks, especially those with bitter flavors, and cocktails made before Prohibition.
Plymouth Gin
This gin can only he made in Plymouth, England. Plymouth Gin is not like London Dry Gin, which can also be made anywhere around the globe. This is because it is only available in Plymouth, England, a southern port city located 190 miles away from London.
What makes this unique? Although it is similar to London Dry Gin in taste, this version has drier and more earthier ingredients. It is also sweeter and has more citrus flavors. This gin is typically made with seven botanical ingredients: Angelica root, dried orange skins, dried coriander seeds and dried orange peels. Both roots give off earthier notes. The Negroni works well with Plymouth Gin.
Genever Gin, as original as you can get, was created in 16th-century. Gin is actually made from malt wine spirit. The grains go through five days of fermentation before it becomes a mashing. This process is very similar to whiskey’s. The distillers will then add various botanicals.
What makes it special? Genever Gin doesn’t have a predominant Juniper flavor. It is slightly more bitter than the other types. It contains ginger, cloves (caraway), nutmeg, and other common ingredients. There will not be the same citrus notes as in London dry Gin or Plymouth. The final product is more robust than Old Tom and is widely considered the best option for mixing cocktails.
Navy Strength Gin
“Navy strength” basically means a London Dry Gin that is overproof. This was once in the British Royal Navy’s common rotation. At 57% ABV, it’s a strong spirit. London dry Gin typically peaks at 40-45%.
What makes it special? Imagine London dry Gin with steroids. It is intense. Many distillers try to achieve a balance between the high ABV and its flavors. While it may seem dry and London-dry, it can still make your hair stand on end.
