A jewellery buying guide

Shopping at a Jewellery Shop
Jewellery should meet its intended purpose, be in good condition and as described. The best thing about shopping in a shop is the ability to inspect the item prior to purchasing. A benefit of shopping at Welsh jewellery shops is the ability to speak with staff about the item’s metal production and/or stones (if they were used) and how best to take care of it.

If possible, ask the retailer to demonstrate how to use a jeweller’s loupe (or eyeglass) to inspect your purchase. You will find it difficult to argue that the marks, scratches, etc. are not due to wear and tears once you have left the jewellery shop. Ask about returns, insurance, as well as any supporting documentation.

Returning your jewellery

Do not assume that smaller shops will extend your statutory rights because large retailers often do. Ask the retailer if they have a returns policy. You are not entitled to return the item if it does not fit you after trying it on. Fair wear and tears is not a fault. If a problem occurs because you didn’t follow the care instructions provided on purchase, you have no rights.

It is not possible to assume that jewellery that has been worn and damaged can be returned. Your legal rights prevent you from requesting a refund, unless there’s a fault that was not caused by misuse or an accident. Locate the proof of purchase. Keep in mind that you are responsible for showing where and when the item you purchased.

You should immediately contact the jeweller and report the problem. If you purchased the jewellery locally, take it to the jeweller. If possible, bring the item and packaging along with any proof of purchase. If you can’t take the item back, call or write to the trader. He will usually ask to inspect it. It is best to take a photograph of any item that shows the problem or fault.

You can accept a repair even if there was a small fault at the point of sale. You may still request a refund or replacement if the repairs are not satisfactory. Jewellery repairs should be done within a reasonable timeframe and without causing significant inconvenience. Restoring the item to its original condition is a prerequisite for any Jewellery repairs. If this is not possible, you can claim a replacement or compensation. This could be in the form either of a lump sum or the cost for the item to be repaired. If the item is not able to be replaced or repaired economically you can ask for a return. If you’re unable to reach an agreement and the retailer is NAJ member, we can also be contacted to complain.
Buy Jewellery Online, by Mail Order or through a TV Channel

To decide whether to purchase jewellery online, from a TV station or by mail order, images and descriptions will be used. This law gives you additional protection. You have 14 days from when you receive the goods to cancel a contract.

The right to cancel or return any order you place for Jewellery is available once it arrives. You have the right to cancel an order if the goods are not what you expected or you change your mind. This usually happens within a 14-day ‘cooling off’ period. You may cancel any time you wish, up to the fourteenth day after the day that your goods were delivered. You can cancel your order by notifying the seller by phone, fax, letter or email. For letters, please send them by Royal Mail Special Delivery so that you can track their progress and prove that you sent them.

If you have already made payment for the goods or services, the seller must immediately refund the money. The money will be refunded for the original jewellery purchase and delivery cost. If the contract specifies otherwise, you will have to pay for the return shipping costs. The seller will not be able to charge additional charges, such as administration and restocking. We recommend that you contact trading standards if the seller is not a NAJ member.
Certificates for Jewellery Valuation

If the appraisal certificate provided by the jeweller is more than the item limit for your home contents coverage, please inform your insurance company. Your insurer will need to have sufficient information in order to arrange a replacement item if the original item is stolen or lost. It is helpful if the jewellery valuation includes a digital image and a description for any precious stones.
